Thomas, Media Inquiry This column has been with me since 1996, and in the last few weeks I've been thinking about becoming a multimedia artist. I've been doing "traditional" work (drawing, painting, printmaking, etc.) for most of my adult life. But I've been dabbling with video, and even in the last year or two, I've been focusing more on interactive, collaborative work that includes multi-media. In writing this column I've often dealt with the problem of representing quality in the arts. But perhaps it's time to move on, to become more than just an academic conversation - to realize, at last, that I'm not just talking about "quality" as an idea, but talking about the quality of a thing. Multimedia must begin to stand apart from the rest of the conversation. We have to raise questions that can't be answered with "Yes," or "No," or a statistical analysis of who has won a Grammy, or a Pulitzer. Multimedia must return to focus on the experiential quality of a thing. We know from anthropology, from studies on media and the arts, from insights gained in some other disciplines, from our own experiences working in arts organizations, that quality is best understood in terms of experience, not information. We need to remember that a computer isn't a report on the brain. If we can create things that are significant and memorable, we've done something worthwhile.
